Drug Formulation

Maoshan Atractylodes (preferably black with small cinnabar specks; soak in rice washing water until soft, slice, dry in an oven, and grind into powder) 3 liang; Cloves (male or female, as available) 6 qian; Tianma (sliced, oven-dried, and ground into powder) 3 liang 6 qian; Realgar (transparent, finely ground, and water-washed) 3 liang 6 qian; Ephedra (knots removed, finely chopped,roasted, and ground into a powder) 3 liang 6 qian, cinnabar (finely ground and washed with water) 3 liang 6 qian, genuine toad venom 9 qian (dissolved in high-quality rice wine), musk (top-quality, ground into a powder) 3 qian, cotton-veined rhubarb (sliced, sun-dried, and ground into a powder) 6 liang, licorice (peeled, lightly roasted, and ground into a powder) 2 liang 4 qian.

Processing

Grind each ingredient into a fine powder. Form into pills the size of radish seeds using glutinous rice porridge as the binder. Coat with cinnabar powder, allow to dry, and store in a porcelain jar for future use.

Instructions for Use

For mild cases, take 3 pills; for severe cases, take 7 pills. Place them under the tongue and swallow after a short while. For conditions such as heatstroke, colic, or abdominal pain caused by cold, first grind 2 pills into a fine powder and blow it into the nostrils, or place them under the tongue and swallow after a short while; then administer 6 pills with Yin-Yang Water or cool water.For mountain mists and miasmas, exposure to filth on an empty stomach, or wind-cold colds, hold 3 pills in the mouth to prevent pathogenic heat from invading; for boils, carbuncles, and carbuncle toxins, as well as injuries from snakes and scorpions, grind into a powder, mix with good wine, and apply as a poultice;For children with delayed smallpox eruption, acute or chronic convulsions, as well as conditions in the elderly such as ascites and dysphagia, double the dosage and take with Lampwick Decoction or cool water.

Note

Pregnant women should avoid this formula. Furthermore, this formula should not be taken concurrently with Yushu Dan, as licorice and red-bud Euphorbia have opposing properties.
