Processing

Mix all the ingredients together. Take a sand box and first line the bottom with 100 seeds of Cassia tora, 7 apricot kernels (chewed to break them open),2 qian of sea gold sand. Then place the five powdered ingredients into the box. Cover them with another layer of Cassia seeds, apricot kernels, and sea gold sand as before. Place a small piece of purple quartz, about the size of a date, on top of the mixture. Seal the box, then mix 1 liang of cinnabar into an extremely fine powder, blend it with vinegar to form a paste, and use it to seal the seams. Place a heavy object on top and let it sit overnight.Once dry, mix earthworm castings, 1 liang of salt, and several sheets of good-quality paper into a paste. Apply a layer about two fingers thick, then air-dry it in the shade. Dig a pit in the ground 5–6 cun deep and slightly over one chi wide. Line the pit with new cow-head bricks, then place the box in the center of the pit. First, arrange a bundle of grass in a spiral pattern around the box and set it alight.Once the grass is consumed, remove half of the ash and use the remaining half to surround the box. Then use 5 jin of charcoal as the initial fuel. When the charcoal has burned down to about 2 jin, add 1.5 jin of fresh charcoal. Maintain a moderate heat—neither too intense nor too slow—using the 5-jin amount as a standard. When the charcoal has burned down to one scale’s worth, adjust the heat as needed. If the fire is sufficient, cover it with fresh yellow earth for one day. Remove it, grind it into an extremely fine powder, and mix it with date pulp to form pills the size of a tung tree seed. The preparation must strictly follow the prescribed method.
