Drug Formulation

1 jin of refined alum (use bright, white alum that has been calcined: prepare a bed of charcoal on the ground, sprinkle with urine from a young boy, spread the alum on the ground, cover it with a large earthenware basin, and surround it with ash on all four sides for one day and one night; the alum will rise to the surface of the basin—sweep it up to obtain refined alum. From each jin of alum, only 3 liang of refined alum can be obtained; discard the residue at the bottom),5 qian of genuine cinnabar (select red cinnabar resembling a rooster’s comb, clear and odorless; soak in vinegar overnight; then boil with 5 qian of radish seeds and 5 qian of licorice until the liquid evaporates; remove and grind into a fine powder), 1 liang of genuine borax (ground into a fine powder),1 liang of mountain lily bulbs (remove the hairy husks and grind into a fine powder), 1 liang of lotus seed pulp (select fresh-colored seeds, remove all husks and membranes, and grind into a fine powder), 1 liang of pig’s tooth soap (remove the skin and fibrous strands, and grind into a fine powder), genuine musk (for every 10 liang of powdered medicine, add 3 qian and 2 fen of musk), 1 liang of utpala (grind into a fine powder), and 1 liang of purple-backed golden cow (grind into a fine powder).

Processing

Prepare the ingredients according to the prescribed methods, grind them together into a fine powder, mix with Fen wine to form pills the size of radish seeds, and coat them with finely sifted cinnabar.

Instructions for Use

Upon encountering an epidemic or plague, place 1–2 pills under the tip of the tongue and swallow them; taking 5 pills with Honeysuckle Decoction is even more effective. Adults take 9 pills; children take 3 pills. For cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, hairy carbuncles, rashes, epidemic diseases, various types of rashes, “big-head” and “paralytic foot” epidemics, and yin-yang edema;stroke, cold-induced illness, heatstroke, and yin-yang water retention—these may also be taken with Agastache Decoction; for muscle cramps and abdominal pain, take with Papaya Decoction; for yin-yang malaria, take one hour before a decoction of seven sections of a peach branch from the southeast; for red and white dysentery and vomiting with watery diarrhea, take with stale tea or old rice porridge; for various types of abdominal distension, take with Radish Seed Decoction;Qi stagnation, phlegm obstruction, or evil influence—manifesting as facial paralysis, joint and bone pain, or loss of consciousness—take with warm wine; ginger juice may also be used; for headaches caused by wind, grind the formula into a paste and apply to both temples, then take with a decoction of mint and perilla leaves; for infantile convulsions, take with a mint decoction; for women with amenorrhea or blood-induced fainting, take with a peach kernel decoction; for phlegm obscuring the heart orifices, take with a decoction of aged tangerine peel and ginger juice;For “Five Absolutes” with a warm heart, take with a child’s urine; for trauma, painful abscesses, insect bites, and all toxic conditions in surgery, take with honeysuckle decoction, and apply several grains to the affected area.

Note

Rice porridge is strictly contraindicated; those who consume it will be difficult to treat; pregnant women should not take this remedy.
