Processing

Prepare each of the above herbs according to established standards, chop them, and place them in oil. Simmer slowly in a copper pot over a mulberry-wood fire until they turn dry and black. Remove from heat, strain through raw silk to remove the residue, wipe the pot clean; the medicinal oil must be concentrated to the point where a drop forms a bead when held over water. For every 1 jin of medicinal oil, use 8 liang of sieved orpiment, adding it gradually while simmering over low heat. Stir continuously with mulberry, locust, and willow twigs to prevent settling at the bottom. When blue smoke rises, the ointment is ready; adjust the heat based on the desired consistency, then add half a jin of refined rosin and 6 liang of beeswax,(using 1 jin of medicinal oil as the standard). Stir until uniform and allow to cool. Once the ointment has solidified, cover the pot with soil for 3 days. Remove it, then bring water to a boil in a separate pot. Place the medicinal pot on top and melt the ointment over the hot water bath, stirring continuously with mulberry, locust, and willow twigs 300–500 times to remove the heat toxicity. Add the following ingredients: musk, toad venom, opium flakes (presumably opium), Yangqishi (the “cloud-head” variety), and Bai Zhan—each 6 qian; cloves, frankincense, Guangmuxiang, realgar, dragon bone, agarwood, late-season silkworm moths, Japanese sulfur, cinnabar, mulberry cuttlefish bone, dragon’s blood, and myrrh—each 4 qian; and astragalus (peeled, honey-fried, and ground into powder)—3 qian. The above ingredients must be genuine and authentic; after proper processing, grind them into an extremely fine powder. Begin by boiling the medicinal oil; gradually add the powdered herbs to the oil while stirring until thoroughly blended. Immediately pour the mixture into cold water and knead into cakes weighing 5 qian each.
