Drug Formulation

1 liang of Bright Cinnabar (ground), 1 qian of Musk (ground),7 tender peach shoots, 7 tender willow shoots (if unavailable, use the bark; it must face east—those facing east are best), 1 male snake molt (one with both head and tail intact; those shed on trees are male; otherwise, take only the middle 5 cun, burn until the smoke is nearly gone, then quickly remove it; place it in a porcelain bowl on the ground, surround it with wet soil, leave it for a long time, then remove and grind into a powder).

Processing

Grind cinnabar and musk into a very fine powder. Grind the tender shoots of peach and willow together with the above two ingredients until fine, then add the snake molt ash and grind until uniform. Form into pills the size of a Hu Jiao seed using glutinous rice, coat with cinnabar, and dry in the sun.

Instructions for Use

For difficult labor, take 1 pill per dose, washed down with light vinegar broth. Shortly thereafter, the infant will be born; take the pill from the child’s hand—left for a boy, right for a girl—and guide it out with your hand.
