Processing

Take 8 liang of sulfur, combined with 8 liang of genuine sesame oil. Crush the sulfur and place it in the cold oil in a stewing pot over a charcoal fire; the fire should be gentle, not intense. Stir slowly with mulberry twigs until the sulfur is completely dissolved, then pour the mixture into a large water jar. Immediately skim off the oil and water from the surface; the remaining substance will be golden in color. Weigh the pure sulfur at the bottom of the jar to determine the amount in liang, then combine it with an equal amount of fragrant sesame oil in liang. Melt it again using the same heat control as before, then pour it out. Repeat this process three times in total; For the fourth cycle, use pure cottonseed oil mixed with a certain number of liang of sulfur. Melt it again using the same heat control as before, then pour it into a large water vat. Quickly skim off the oil and water from the surface; the color will be crimson. For the fifth cycle, use 4 liang of soap and boil it in water for six hours; For the sixth pass, use 4 liang of soapberry and boil it in water for six hours to extract all the oil used in sulfur production; skim off the water—the resulting liquid is purple like the flame of a sulfur fire; for the seventh pass, use charcoal ash from a furnace and treat it with lye water for six hours; for the eighth pass, use water-soaked tofu for six hours to completely neutralize the soap and lye properties; For the ninth transformation, use the juice extracted from “field-character grass” (a plant found in rice paddies with leaves shaped like the Chinese character for “field,” harvested in August–September), mixed with water and processed for six hours; before use, grind it into a fine powder. For every 1 liang of purified sulfur, mix with 2 liang of roasted glutinous rice flour, and form into pills using either the water method or wet pounding.
