Drug Formulation

Sulfur (also known as Shitingzhi or Jinye) 3–5 liang to 10 liang (all calcined; sulfur imported from abroad is considered the best; other types are acceptable as long as they are free of impurities; crushing and grinding it into a jar yields 8–9 fen, which is acceptable).

Processing

Take one calcined medicine jar, fill it with the above ingredients, and cover it. Gather one large handful of dog’s-foot grass (also known as Shilongrui),one large handful of Wood Mirror Grass (which grows in rice paddies; each stem bears four flowers arranged in a “田” character pattern; also known as Paddy Field Grass, as it grows as a solitary stem). Place these two herbs in an iron mortar and pound them until pulverized. Add a handful of yellow earth and mix thoroughly with the pestle until it forms a mud-like consistency (if the above two herbs are unavailable, they may be substituted with Motherwort). Use this mixture to wrap the base and sides of the calcined medicine jar to a thickness of 5–6 fen, leaving only the rim uncoated. Then place it on level ground, pile 5–6 jin of charcoal around it on all sides, and place 1 jin of well-burned charcoal on top. Burn it until the pot is 9 fen deep and uniformly red-hot. Watch closely for a blue flame to rise from the rim; immediately stir the charcoal pile and cover the pot completely with 3 dou of wood ash to prevent the flames from escaping. Wait until it cools, then remove the pot from the ashes and scrape off the mud.The above describes the first calcination; follow this procedure for each subsequent calcination. For the second calcination, follow the previous method: pack the herbs tightly with a pestle and calcine as before. After five calcinations, if the heat control is proper, the resulting substance will emit a fragrance like that of a cooked egg—this indicates the process is complete. If you need to take it urgently, calcining it just twice is sufficient (though a higher number of calcination cycles is preferable). Once the required number of cycles is complete, bury the furnace in clean soil overnight to remove the fire toxins (it is especially beneficial to scrape away any sand or stones from the bottom after each calcination). Then remove the furnace, place it in a pot of water, and boil for 10–20 boils.then smash the furnace, take out the medicine, and pound it into a fine paste. Transfer it to a mortar, add water, and grind it until it is as smooth as mud, with no coarse particles remaining. Grind it until it is dry. For every 1 liang of medicine, use 1 liang or more of steamed buns; squeeze out the excess water, mix it with the medicine, and pound it in a tea mortar until it is uniform and flour-like. Form it into pills the size of a paulownia seed and dry them in the sun.
