Drug Formulation

10 liang of sulfur, 5 liang of cinnabar.

Processing

Grind the above ingredients into an extremely fine powder and sift it. Wash 25 liang of cinnabar thoroughly and place both into a 3-dou iron pot. Add water until it reaches 7-fen of the pot’s capacity and boil for 7 fu. As the liquid evaporates, replenish it with hot water, stirring continuously with a willow twig from the southeast, bark and all.If the medicine adheres to the twigs, scrape it off immediately with white mulberry bark and return it to the pot. After the required number of days has elapsed, take a small amount and burn it over the fire; it is ready when no “ghost flame” appears. If a “ghost flame” appears, boil it again until the flame ceases; then stop the heat and wash it with water once more; decant and discard the cinnabar residue.Place cinnabar and sulfur in a pot and simmer over low heat until all moisture has evaporated; form into a lump, place it in a cast-iron pot, and surround it with at least one ceng of charcoal to calcine until a liquid forms. Wait until the fire has died down and the mixture has cooled; remove the medicine, wrap it in 5–7 layers of paper, dig a pit in the ground, and bury it overnight. Remove it and grind it finely; boil jujubes with lamp wick, peel off the flesh, and form it into pills the size of a paulownia seed.
