Processing

First, grind the two types of alum and the fire-refined salt into a fine powder, place them in a large spoon, add a small cup of fire wine, and simmer until dissolved; remove from heat as soon as it dries, then grind into a fine powder;Separately, grind the mercury, cinnabar, and realgar into a fine powder. Wait until the mercury no longer shows any specks before adding the fire-processed soda and alum, and mix thoroughly. Coat a Yangcheng jar with paper-fiber clay to a thickness of one finger, then air-dry it. Gently dust it with clay throughout the drying process to prevent cracking; if any cracks appear, patch them with the same clay mixture. Once completely dry, sun-dry it again; only when no cracks remain should the prepared mixture be placed inside.Secure the jar with an iron oil lamp as a lid, place an iron crossbar on top, and fasten the lamp firmly in place with iron straps and wire. Dip twisted strips of cotton paper dipped in honey into the gaps around the jar’s opening. Seal the top of the lamp with fine powdered baked gypsum mixed with vinegar. Place two pieces of charcoal fire beneath the lamp to heat it; this will help the seal dry more quickly.Additionally, drive three iron nails into the ground, place the jar on top of them, and position a large piece of charcoal beneath the jar. Build a hundred-hole furnace around it. Use three sticks of incense: during the first stick, apply heat from below; if the fire is too strong, the mercury will evaporate first. During the second stick, direct the heat toward the upper half of the jar and use a brush dipped in water to wipe the bowl;during the third stick of incense, position the fire level with the jar’s mouth and fan it with a fan, frequently wiping the bowl to prevent it from drying out;for if it dries, the mercury will evaporate prematurely. Prepare in advance by mixing salt with brine to make the clay for the jar extremely wet. Tie the tip of a brush to a piece of iron wire and attach it to the spout. If green smoke rises from the jar, it means the mercury is escaping; immediately dip the brush in the jar’s clay to seal the leak. After the three incense sticks have burned out, remove the fire and allow the jar to cool and set. Only then should you open the jar, as the elixir will have fully matured. There will be approximately 6–7 qian of elixir in the bowl; scrape it out, grind it into a fine powder, and store it in a porcelain jar.
