Drug Formulation
1 liang of mercury, 2 liang of white alum, 2 liang of calcined sodium carbonate.

Processing
Place the three ingredients in an iron cauldron, cover tightly with a thick porcelain bowl, seal with salt-mixed clay, and press down firmly on the bowl’s base. Calcine over low heat for three incense sticks’ worth of time until mercury vapor rises inside the bowl. Remove and leave on the ground overnight to dispel the fire toxicity. Store in a porcelain jar; it may be used only after one year has passed.

Instructions for Use
Take 3 fen per dose, mixed with 3 qian of sifted flour. For robust patients, divide into 3 doses; for those of moderate constitution, into 5 doses; for the frail, into 7 doses. Each day, take half a jin of Poria cocos, crush it, and boil it in 7 bowls of water until reduced to 5 bowls. Strain out the residue, add one dose of the aforementioned elixir, and boil again until reduced to 3 bowls. Consume the entire amount in one day; the next day, repeat the procedure as before.After 2 or 3 days, the throat and soft palate will become swollen and painful, and fluid will ooze from the gums. By the 7th day, the toxin will be completely eliminated and the condition will resolve on its own. For severe swelling, use 1 qian of Coptis, 1 qian of rhinoceros horn, 1 qian of Dipsacus asper, and 1 he of black beans; decoct into a solution and use it for gargling.
