Drug Formulation

6 qian of Sichuan Aconite, 6 qian of Wild Aconite, 8 qian of Coptis (with wings), 6 qian of Angelica sinensis, 8 qian of White Angelica, 8 qian of Trichosanthes, 6 qian of Bletilla, 8 qian of Cassia, 6 qian of Poria, 8 qian of White Polygonum, 5 qian of Saponaria, 6 qian of Lindera, 5 qian of Mulberry twigs, 5 qian of Jujube twigs, 5 qian of Peach twigs, 5 qian of Willow twigs, and 5 qian of Locust twigs.

Processing

Soak the above herbs in 3 jin of sesame oil overnight, then simmer until charred and strain out the residue. Add 1 jin of finely ground Huang Dan and continue simmering until the mixture turns the color of lacquer. Quickly stir with two peach or willow sticks until the mixture reaches the consistency where a drop of water forms a bead. Add 4 qian of frankincense and 4 qian of myrrh, then thicken the paste and set aside for future use.

Instructions for Use

To use, spread the ointment on a piece of cloth or silk and apply it to the Feishu acupoint (below the third thoracic vertebra, 1 cun 5 fen lateral). Begin application on the first day of the “Initial Fu” period and continue for the full three “Fu” periods; then begin again on the Winter Solstice and continue until the “Nine-Nine” period.
