Commentary
Taking ramie root (Zhu-ma-gen) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its sweet flavor and cold property: its action follows the Heart, Liver meridians and works to clear heat, stop bleeding, calm the fetus and promote urination. Longan flesh (Long-yan-rou) fills the deputy position. Sweet-warm in property, it enters the Heart, Spleen meridians and works to tonify the heart and spleen, nourish blood and calm the spirit. Finally, white sugar (Bai-tang) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb; its role is to moisten and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Working as one, the formula nourish qi and helps maintain pregnancy, thereby targeting the threatened miscarriage pattern that underlies the complaint.
