Drug Formulation
2 liang of Angelica sinensis, 2 liang of raw Rehmannia, 2 liang of Angelica dahurica, 2 liang of Lonicera japonica, 2 liang of Sichuan Aconite, 1 liang of Saposhnikovia root, 1 liang of Schizonepeta, 1 liang of red peony root, 1 liang of Notopterygium, 1 liang of dried silkworm, 1 liang of cicada slough,Tribulus terrestris 1 liang, Clematis chinensis 1 liang, Polygonum multiflorum 1 liang, fresh citrus peel 1 liang, Achyranthes bidentata 1 liang, Pangolin scales 1 liang, snake shed 1 liang, licorice 1 liang, Tosasen 1 liang (added later), Cinnamomum cassia 1 liang, Phellodendron amurense 1 liang, Aconitum carmichaeli 2 liang, frankincense 4 qian, myrrh 4 qian (added later), Dongdan 1.5 jin.

Processing
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Add 6 jin of sesame oil and steep the medicinal powder in the oil for 5 days in spring, 3 days in summer, 7 days in fall, and 10 days in winter. Once the required time has elapsed, transfer the mixture to a pot, simmer over low heat until completely dried out, strain out the residue,return the purified oil to the pot and simmer until a drop of oil forms a bead. First, add the Tosa powder and bring to a boil; then place the pot on a cool stove for a short while before adding the Dongdan. The Dongdan may be used as “cold Dan” (unroasted and unfried) or as “hot Dan” (roasted and fried). Adding the cold Dan requires extreme care, while the hot Dan is easier to process.Once the elixir is added, stir continuously without stopping. When it has cooled and is nearly paste-like, add frankincense and myrrh, stir until uniform, and the paste is ready for application.
