How to treat gastrodia allergy reaction

Allergy reactions from gastrodia fall into mild, moderate and severe grades, with different targeted treatment plans for oral ingestion allergy and facial skincare contact allergy respectively.

Part 1: First universal rule

Stop taking/eating gastrodia orally or wash off gastrodia skincare products from skin completely right away. Drink plenty of warm water to speed up metabolism and excretion of allergens inside the body.

Part 2: Mild allergy (most common: itching, scattered rash, small urticaria, slight facial redness)

Scenario A: Oral gastrodia allergy

Symptoms: Body itching, scattered red spots, small hives, no swelling or breathing discomfort.

  1. Take oral second-generation antihistamines (non-sedating): loratadine, cetirizine, fexofenadine, follow dosage instructions on package, once daily.
  2. Apply calamine lotion topically onto itchy rashes 2–3 times per day to relieve itching; do not scratch the rash to avoid broken skin and bacterial infection.
  3. Avoid spicy food, seafood, alcohol within 2–3 days to prevent allergy worsening. Most mild symptoms fade completely within 1–3 days.

Scenario B: Facial allergy caused by gastrodia serum/mask

Symptoms: facial itch, flushing, tiny papules, tight dryness.

  1. Rinse face thoroughly with clean room-temperature water, stop all functional skincare (acid, whitening, retinol, exfoliating products).
  2. Cold compress with sterile gauze soaked in normal saline for 5–10 minutes, twice daily, to calm redness and itching.
  3. Only use simple barrier-repair moisturizer containing panthenol, ceramide or centella asiatica for daily care.
  4. No facial masks, makeup for 3–5 days.

Part 3: Moderate allergy (large-area hives, lip/eyelid swelling, stomach nausea, throat tickling)

  1. Continue oral antihistamine medicine, you may double the conventional single dose on the first day per drug instructions.
  2. For obvious facial/lip edema: cold compress saline 3 times a day.
  3. If accompanied by nausea, bloating: eat warm congee, avoid oily food to protect the stomach.
  4. Observe closely. If throat tightness appears within several hours, go to hospital emergency department immediately.

Part 4: Severe anaphylaxis (life-threatening, emergency treatment required immediately)

Dangerous symptoms: swollen throat, tight chest, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, cold sweats, falling blood pressure, whole-body widespread swelling, loss of consciousness.

  1. Call local emergency number instantly.
  2. Let the person lie flat, lift their legs higher than the heart position to maintain blood pressure; keep the airway unobstructed.
  3. Do not eat or drink anything while having breathing trouble.
  4. Hospitals will inject epinephrine, glucocorticoids and anti-allergy injections for rescue.

Part 5: Special crowd treatment rules

  1. Pregnant women: Only use loratadine after doctor’s approval, avoid random anti-allergy pills. Prioritize cold compress and physical soothing for skin allergy.
  2. Children under 12 years old: Use children’s cetirizine drops/syrup strictly according to body weight dosage.
  3. People with liver/kidney disease: Consult a doctor before taking antihistamines.

Part 6: Things you must NOT do

  1. Do not scratch itchy rash, which causes skin breakage, infection and pigmentation.
  2. Do not apply potent hormone ointment on the face for long-term relief of facial allergy (easily induce hormone-dependent dermatitis).
  3. Do not drink alcohol or eat seafood during allergy recovery, which aggravates allergic reactions.
  4. Never take gastrodia again after you have experienced an allergic reaction.

Part 7: Post-allergy prevention

  1. Anyone allergic to gastrodia must permanently avoid oral gastrodia powder, slices, gastrodin capsules, as well as skincare products containing gastrodia extract.
  2. If you want to try gastrodia for the first time later: only take 1–2g tiny dosage and observe physical reaction for 24 hours.
  3. For gastrodia skincare new users: always perform a patch test on inner arm skin for 24 hours before facial application.

Summary

  1. Mild itching and rash: discontinue exposure + oral antihistamines + calamine lotion, recover quickly;
  2. Swelling and throat discomfort belong to moderate allergy, need close monitoring;
  3. Dyspnea, hypotension and unconsciousness are anaphylaxis, requiring emergency rescue without delay.
