Eight-Ingredient Asarum Decoction,A persistent cough caused by phlegm-dampness that has gradually developed into edema; its symptoms are not limited to any particular season. The cough continues unceasingly day and night; exposure to any cough-inducing substances causes severe distress. In severe cases, the eyes may protrude, breathing may become so labored as to feel as if it will cease, sweating occurs, and urination and defecation are impaired. Phlegm, fluid, saliva, nasal discharge, and froth are expelled without end; shortness of breath and shoulder-breathing occur; and every morning, the eyes are swollen, preventing one from lying flat to sleep.

Chinese Name : 细辛八味汤

Drug Formulation

5 liang of Asarum, 5 liang of Pinellia (washed), 5 liang of Cinnamon Bark, 5 liang of White Mulberry Bark, 4 liang of Dried Ginger, 4 liang of Angelica, 6 liang of Sodium Carbonate, 6 he of Apricot Kernels (remove the tips and split the kernels, then grind).

Benefits

A persistent cough caused by phlegm-dampness that has gradually developed into edema; its symptoms are not limited to any particular season. The cough continues unceasingly day and night; exposure to any cough-inducing substances causes severe distress. In severe cases, the eyes may protrude, breathing may become so labored as to feel as if it will cease, sweating occurs, and urination and defecation are impaired. Phlegm, fluid, saliva, nasal discharge, and froth are expelled without end; shortness of breath and shoulder-breathing occur; and every morning, the eyes are swollen, preventing one from lying flat to sleep.

Instructions for Use

Boil 9 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, strain out the dregs, and add芒消. Divide into 3 doses and take while warm; each dose should be taken over a period equivalent to walking ten li. This should bring about a swift and effective relief; afterward, rest and recuperate. After 3–4 days, prepare the formula into pills and take them.

Note

Avoid raw scallions, raw vegetables, mutton, and malt syrup.
