Drug Formulation

2 jin of pure sesame oil, 4 liang of fetal hair (if unavailable, substitute with clean hair from a young boy), 5 qian of manchurian armadillo, 1 liang of white alum (sifted),4 liang of beeswax, 2 liang of refined cinnabar, 6 liang of colophony, 5 qian of mercury oxide (ground), 5 qian of frankincense, 5 qian of myrrh (ground separately), 2 liang of swallow’s nest mud (from a north-facing nest) (lightly roasted), 5 qian of Wulingzhi (thoroughly washed), 5 qian of musk (ground separately), and 5 qian of mitras.

Processing

Decoct the Pangolin Scale and Wulingzhi for several boils, then add the fetal hair and simmer until dissolved. Strain out the residue, weigh out 24 liang of pure, refined oil, and return it to the pot. Add the white alum and decoct for 2–3 boils.add beeswax and lead oxide, boil once, add colophony and official powder totaling 6 liang, boil once more, then add the swallow’s nest mud; when the mixture turns the color of agarwood and forms beads when water is dripped onto it, remove from heat. Only then add frankincense and myrrh, stir evenly; after a short while, add mercury oxide, stirring with peach or willow twigs until warm enough to handle; then add musk and stir evenly. Soak in water for 7 days to remove the toxic properties from the fire.

Instructions for Use

Apply a poultice to scrofula: use a soft one for unruptured lesions and a dry one for ulcerated ones. Take Xiakucao Decoction internally.
