Porphyra

Porphyra is a name used in traditional Chinese medicine. It refers to the thallus of plants in the genus Porphyra of the family Porphyraaceae, including Porphyra haitanensis T.J.Chang et B.F.Zheng, P. yezoensis Ueda, P. suborbiculata Kjellm., P. tenera Kjellm., and P. dentata Kiellm.It has the effects of resolving phlegm and softening hardened masses, soothing the throat, relieving coughs, clearing heat and alleviating restlessness, and promoting diuresis to eliminate dampness. It is primarily used to treat goiters, sore throat, coughs, restlessness and insomnia, beriberi, edema, painful urination, and diarrhea with bloody stools.

Poria

Fushen is the name of a traditional Chinese medicine. It consists of the portion of the sclerotium of Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf—a fungus belonging to the genus Poria in the Polyporaceae family—that contains pine root in its center. It has the effect of calming the mind and soothing the spirit. It is primarily used to treat palpitations, anxiety, forgetfulness, and insomnia.

Rehmannia

Rehmannia, a name in traditional Chinese medicine, refers to the fresh or dried tuberous roots of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch., a plant in the Scrophulariaceae family. It is primarily produced in Henan. It is harvested in the fall; the crown, fibrous roots, and soil are removed for fresh use, or the tuberous roots are slowly dried until about 80% dry. The former is commonly known as “fresh Rehmannia,” and the latter as “raw Rehmannia.”Fresh Rehmannia has the effects of clearing heat, generating body fluids, cooling the blood, and stopping bleeding. It is primarily used to treat heat-related yin deficiency, a crimson tongue with restlessness and thirst, rashes caused by warm toxins, hemoptysis and epistaxis, and swelling and pain in the throat;Raw Rehmannia has the effects of clearing heat, cooling the blood, nourishing yin, and promoting fluid production. It is primarily used to treat heat invading the营血 (ying-blood), rashes caused by warm toxins, hemoptysis and epistaxis, yin depletion due to febrile diseases, a crimson tongue with intense thirst, constipation due to fluid depletion, fever due to yin deficiency, bone-consumptive fever, and internal heat-induced diabetes.

Verbena

Verbena is a herb used to promote blood circulation and regulate menstruation. It consists of the dried aerial parts of Verbena officinalis L., a plant of the Verbenaceae family, and is primarily produced in Hubei, Jiangsu, Guizhou, and Guangxi.This herb has the effects of promoting blood circulation, dispersing blood stasis, detoxifying, promoting diuresis, alleviating jaundice, and treating malaria.
