Processing
Sift all the above ingredients. Soak only the cinnabar, orpiment, and realgar in a solution of lye and vinegar; steep the azurite in fine wine within a copper vessel, seal it tightly with paper, and expose it to the midday sun for one hundred days. If time is short, five days will suffice; do not warm it over a fire at any time.Grind each into a fine powder, mix with lye and vinegar until the moisture content is just right, and place in an earthenware cauldron. Seal it tightly with “Liu Yi” clay to prevent air leakage. Once dry, attach an iron ring with legs 1 chi 5 cun high to the top of the cauldron. Gradually add fire; any type of charcoal—soft or hard—is acceptable. When first lighting the fire, take two “cang” of mature charcoal, each 4 cun long, and place them on top of the crucible. Wait until the embers have burned down to 3 fen and 2 fen, then replenish them. Repeat this three times, using only mature fire each time. Then use “Yisheng” charcoal. After the third round of mature fire, gradually increase the heat. By the time the first “fu” period arrives, the fire should be nearly touching the crucible—at which point it is full. Add charcoal beneath the crucible twice more, then stop. Once the fire has completely died out and the crucible is extremely cold, remove it.The refined essence of the medicine will rise, condense, and adhere to the cauldron; those with five colors are of the highest quality, those with three colors are next, and those with a single color are of the lowest. Even if it lacks five colors, as long as its color is bright and pure as snow, it is of the highest quality. If not all of the essence rises, apply heat again as before. Use a rooster’s wing to sweep it up—the amount collected may vary—then grind it into a paste as thick as jujube syrup and form it into pills the size of millet grains.
Benefits
Effective for dysentery, abdominal pain and distension, post-mortem syndrome with aversion to wind, mania and delirium with “ghost-like speech,” poisonous spells and demonic afflictions, warm malaria, and all forms of malignant toxins.
Instructions for Use
It is most effective for treating hemiplegia, severe wind-induced disorders, epilepsy, and rheumatic arthritis. Dosage: Take one pill on an empty stomach at dawn, approximately the size of a millet seed. For chronic malaria that has resisted all other treatments, accompanied by distension and fullness in the chest and abdomen, shortness of breath, and swelling of the body, face, and legs—to the point of imminent death—take one pill; vomiting will follow, and the patient will recover. Some may recover without vomiting. If vomiting does not occur and the condition persists, take one and a half pills. If it still does not improve, increase the dose by half a pill the following day. Continue gradually increasing the dose until the condition is fully resolved and the patient’s breathing stabilizes; at this point, the patient should vomit greenish-yellow or white substances. For those with hard lumps under the flanks caused by malaria, these will also be eliminated. If there is no distension in the chest and abdomen, one pill may be administered, increasing the dose daily as needed—there is no strict requirement to induce vomiting. Recovery may occur after just one pill; do not administer additional doses. Alternatively, one dose may be taken every three days; in all cases, the dosage must be carefully adjusted to suit the patient’s condition. If there is fluid in the abdomen that is expelled immediately, do not be alarmed. If the onset of malaria is recent and the patient is in good spirits, one may also consider the patient’s condition and the nature of the medicine, combine two pills into one, and take it all at once. This should be done after lunch; ensure the medicine is neither too cold nor too hot, and allow the patient to eat fermented soybean porridge or regular porridge as desired. For malaria patients suffering from night sweats and weakness, take one pill daily; vomiting will cease immediately. For those with malaria who do not sweat, have poor circulation, and cold feet, take one pill; if no sweat appears within three days, circulation will improve, the feet will warm up, and a moist sweat will appear; if vomiting occurs before three days have passed, it will cease immediately. For malaria patients with a sallow complexion, color will return within three days of taking the medicine. Some may require vomiting to recover; others may recover after taking only a small amount; still others may be given 3–4 pills of a potent remedy—if they feel the medicine taking effect. Since people’s constitutions vary, treatment cannot be standardized. Begin with a dose the size of a millet seed, gradually increasing it as tolerated. Once the medicine’s potency is evident, do not take multiple doses at once. For patients who have been bedridden for a long time without recovery, who are emaciated, and who suffer from abdominal distension, swelling, or diarrhea, the prognosis is often fatal; however, administering this medicine may save 3–4 out of every 10 patients. Another recommendation states that for masses and accumulations, take one daogui and wash it down with a small amount of water. For all cases of sudden death, sudden illness (zhong’e), external pathogenic factors (ke’wu), cholera, abdominal distension and bodily stagnation, the “Five Corpse Ailments,” severe illnesses caused by pathogenic wind or external pathogenic factors, fatal epidemics that wipe out entire families, mania, delirium, and speaking as if possessed; or for those who have died and lost vital energy but still have a faint warmth over the heart—lift their head, use an object to pry open their mouth; if it cannot be opened, chisel out two teeth and administer the medicine with water. Once the medicine is swallowed, they will revive. For all chronic illnesses, take one Daogui dose daily and induce sweating; once sweat appears, the patient will recover. If not cured, do not take more than two doses. Some may recover without sweating, while others will not recover without sweating; in such cases, follow the method above but increase the dose by half a Daogui, continuing until recovery is achieved.Always carry a crimson pouch containing nine Daogui of the powder; men should wear it on the left, women on the right, and children should tie it to their heads to ward off malaria, toxic miasmas, epidemic diseases, and the “She Gong” affliction common in children. It may be mixed with vinegar, applied to a square inch of paper, and placed on the child’s chest and abdomen, allowing the medicine to treat the condition from above. There are also cases where the patient has already died; if this medicine is administered within two days in winter or one day in summer, the patient will revive as soon as the medicine takes effect; if it does not enter the abdomen, the patient will not survive. If gold teeth or magnetite are added, taking up to five doses will inevitably cause vomiting and diarrhea. After this, the symptoms will subside on their own. The dosage should start with a pill the size of a small bean and gradually decrease; it must not be increased. For severe wind disorders and leprosy, take twenty doses. For hemiplegia, rheumatic arthritis, and various forms of epilepsy caused by wind, take twenty doses. For all other serious illnesses, take only one or two doses, adjusting according to the patient’s condition—whether mild or severe, strong or weak—and do not administer more.To counteract the toxic effects of the medicine, simply boil fatty pork until tender and eat it. After taking this medicine, mild reactions such as headache and fever may last for 1–2 days; in severe cases, one may lose the sense of taste. The sense of taste will gradually return, and one will be able to eat normally after 5 days. If one overeats, it is advisable to exercise moderation. If one experiences nausea or confusion while taking the medicine, boil a decoction of woody Stephania and drink it; this will immediately alleviate the symptoms.
Note
Do not take multiple doses simultaneously. Exercise particular caution regarding oily foods, noodles, fish, meat, and garlic; the medicine should be taken on an empty stomach.
