10 jin of willow twigs (harvested on a sunny day in the countryside), 1 jin of mountain-mined black lead.

Processing

First, use a large iron pot to melt the lead into liquid. Take willow branches 3–4 chi in length—one bundle per person for 3–5 people—and stir them in the molten lead. When the branches are nearly completely charred, scoop them out with a strainer,Place the charcoal in a porcelain jar, cover the opening to prevent the fumes from escaping, and stir again as before until it turns to charcoal. Remove it once more with an iron strainer; discard the lead. Grind the lead slag and ash together with the willow charcoal into a fine powder.
