Drug Formulation

3–7 qian of Prepared Rehmannia, 3–5 qian of Winter Atractylodes, 3–5 qian of Angelica sinensis (avoid if suffering from diarrhea; substitute with Chinese yam if necessary), 2–5 qian of Ginseng (up to 1 liang for severe cases; may be omitted), 1 qian of Fried Licorice, 2–4 qian of Bupleurum, 1–3 qian of Ephedra,Cinnamon Bark 1–2 qian, Dried Ginger 1–2 qian (roasted, or 3–7 slices of stewed fresh ginger may be substituted).

Instructions for Use

Add 2 zhong of water; decoct until reduced to 7 fen; skim off the foam; and take while warm. Alternatively, cover lightly to induce a slight sweat.

Note

This formula should be used in conjunction with the Decoction for Regulating Yin and the Ma-Gui Decoction; it is suitable only for cases of concurrent qi and blood deficiency complicated by severe invasion of cold pathogens, and does not constitute a standard treatment for typhoid fever.
