Transfer to a large iron pot and simmer until no smoke remains. First, remove the coarse sediment and allow to cool. Use thick rice paper with holes pricked in it to filter out the fine sediment, then return the mixture to a clean pot and simmer until it turns black and a drop of water forms a bead that does not disperse.For every 1 jin of oil, add 8 liang of orpiment that has been washed and stir-fried until purple; if orpiment is unavailable, substitute with 8 liang of finely ground Yang Seng powder washed with water. When adding the orpiment, stir continuously with a willow stick; remove from heat before adding the following ingredients: 1 liang of Angelica dahurica, 1 liang of Aconite, 1 liang of Aconite root, 1 liang of Northern Asarum, 1 liang of Pinellia, 1 liang of Galangal,1 liang of Sichuan Aconite (Grind the above 7 ingredients—all wild-harvested—into a fine powder, mix thoroughly into the ointment, and let cool until set. Then add the extremely fine powder of Hekai Ru), 1 liang of cuttlefish bone, 5 qian of frankincense (oil removed), 5 qian of Bai Cao Shuang, 5 qian of myrrh (oil removed), 5 qian of chicken gizzard skin, 5 qian of dragon’s blood, 5 qian of ivory powder, 5 qian of realgar,5 qian of cold water stone, 5 qian of catechu, 5 qian of white lead, 5 qian of cinnabar, 5 qian of red lead, 5 qian of mercury oxide, 3 qian of bluefish gallbladder, 3 qian of bear bile, 2 qian of costus, 2 qian of galangal, 2 qian of camphor, 2 qian of borneol, 2 qian of musk, 2 qian of amber, 2 qian of pearl, 2 qian of dragon bone, and 2 qian of mercury.
