Instructions for Use

Except for the gallbladders and borax, coarsely crush the remaining ingredients. Place them in a large pot with 1 dou of well water and boil for the duration of one incense stick. Transfer the decoction and residue to a clean porcelain basin, then add hot water and boil for another incense stick. Pour the decoction into a separate container, add hot water, and repeat the process a total of four times. Discard the residue when it becomes tasteless. Reduce the decoction by two-thirds, strain it through fine silk, then simmer in a clean earthenware pot until it becomes a paste. Only then should bile be added and simmered until it reaches the consistency of malt syrup. Divide the mixture into small porcelain jars for storage; alternatively, it may be mixed evenly with borax immediately, or borax tablets may be added just before use. For acute cases of heat-induced eye inflammation or “qi-induced eye inflammation,” dilute the mixture with well water and apply 3–5 times; the condition should resolve promptly.
