Drug Formulation

4 liang of Coptis and Coptis Rhizome, half a liang of Euphorbia Seed, 49 apricot kernels, 3 liang of Jinzhou Cypress (crush the Coptis and Cypress into a fine powder, soak in 2 bowls of water overnight, then simmer in a pot until reduced to half a bowl, and strain).

Processing

First, remove the tips and split the apricot kernels into two halves. Use the Ruiren seeds to peel the apricot kernels by rubbing them against your teeth. Grind both the apricot kernels and Ruiren seeds into a fine powder. Add this mixture to the decoction from the previous step and simmer until reduced to 1 large bowl. Strain again, then add high-quality honey and 9 fen of the mixture. Add 1 qian of musk, 1 zi of white alum (sifted),1 zi of realgar, 3 qian of lapis lazuli (if unavailable, substitute with raw lapis lazuli, lightly crushed),2 qian of borneol (placed in a silk bag). Simmer the mixture until it has reduced by about half. Drop the mixture into cold water and wait until the medicine floats on the water’s surface without dispersing; it is then ready. Place the mixture in a small, tightly sealed bottle. Steam it three times over a rice steamer, dipping the bottle into a well after each steaming to cool it completely—this is the best method. Store in a porcelain or silver container.
