Drug Formulation

1 liang of Rheum palmatum, 1 liang of Astragalus membranaceus, 1 liang of Paeonia rubra, 1 liang of Prunus armeniaca, 7 qian and a half of Angelica sinensis, 2 qian and a half of Manis pentadactyla, 2 qian and a half of Sapindus mukorossi, 3 qian of Euphorbia lathyris, half a liang of Frankincense, half a liang of Myrrh, 2 qian and a half of Dragon’s Blood, 2 qian and a half of Mercury Oxide, 7 liang of Orpiment, and 1 jin of sesame oil.

Processing

Except for the five ingredients—Huangdan, Frankincense, Myrrh, Dragon’s Blood, and Mercury Oxide—chop the remaining ingredients, soak them in the oil for over ten days, then simmer in an earthenware pot until the mixture turns slightly black. Stir with a willow or locust twig, filter out the coarse particles, and purify the liquid. Add the Huangdan to the oil and simmer until it forms a paste that does not disperse when dropped into water. Then add the four ingredients—Frankincense, etc.—and stir until thoroughly blended.
