Processing
Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Add 2 jin 4 liang of pure sesame oil and 4 liang of leavened rice residue, then soak the herbs in the mixture. Soak for 3 days in spring and autumn, and 2 days in summer.5 days in winter. Place the oil and herbs in an iron pot and simmer over alternating high and low heat. Add 30 branches each of acacia and willow, each about one cun long, and simmer until charred. Strain through hemp cloth to remove the residue, then return the mixture to the pot and simmer until a drop of oil forms a bead that does not disperse. Pour into a bottle, weigh out exactly 2 jin of oil, and add 1 jin of Shandong Huangdan and 2 liang of rosin.2 liang of beeswax and 3 liang of tung oil (previously boiled with ginger juice), and simmer until the consistency is neither too hard nor too soft. Once cooled, add 3 qian each of frankincense, myrrh, dragon’s blood, catechu, asafoetida, and hundred-herb ash, 5 fen or 1 qian of musk, 3 qian of mercury oxide,3 qian of purslane paste—all finely ground into powder. Add the ingredients to the medicinal oil just as it is nearly ready; adding them too early may cause the medicinal properties to dissipate. Simmer further until the mixture no longer sticks to your hands. Bury the ointment in soil for 3–4 days to remove the fire toxicity, then store it in a porcelain bottle.
