Drug Formulation

Reed-sweetened gypsum (calcined; soaked seven times in a child’s urine, calcined seven times until ash-like, then finely ground and washed with water) 1 liang; Orpiment (finely ground and washed with water) 1 liang; Pearl (placed in a clam shell, bound with iron wire, calcined over a fire, then ground into powder) 5 qian;Cinnabar (finely ground, washed with water) 5 qian (half added to the mixture, half reserved as a coating), Musk (finely ground) 3 qian, Alum (raw) 1 liang, Borneol 3 qian, Frankincense (wrapped in a bundle of bamboo shoot leaves and tied securely; roasted thoroughly over a fire, allowed to cool, then ground; or ground finely with a small amount of lampwick) 3 qian.

Processing

Grind the above ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Use 1 liang and a half of Fuzhou honey, boil it in a copper pot, skim off the film, and filter through silk floss. First add the cinnabar, musk, pearl, alum, and cinnabar; then add the borneol and calcite. While still hot, shape into pills the size of soybeans and store in a porcelain jar.

The longer it is stored, the firmer it becomes and the more effective it is; grind it into a thick paste with well water and apply as usual.
