Processing

Place the above herbs in the oil and let them steep for 7 days. Simmer over low heat, stirring with an iron ladle until the Pinellia turns yellowish-black. Strain out the residue using a bamboo sieve. Separately, grind 3 qian and a half of dragon’s blood into a fine powder, add it to the oil, and stir until evenly mixed. Filter the mixture through fresh cotton into a basin, clarifying the oil by removing the residue. Wipe the pot and ladle clean, then filter it back into the pot through cotton. For every 1 jin of oil, add 5 liang of high-quality yellow丹; if the yellow丹 is particularly potent, use only 4.5 liang. Prepare this for use in winter, spring, or autumn. If using it during the summer months, use 5 liang and 2–3 qian of yellow丹, adjusting the amount based on the potency of the丹. Simmer over a slow wood fire without stirring by hand. Wait until the mixture turns black and begins to overflow slightly, then turn off the heat. Once the foam subsides, resume simmering over low heat as before,When black smoke begins to rise, remove from the heat. After two days, transfer to a charcoal fire; still do not stir by hand even briefly. Continue until—as in the previous 4–5 days—the mixture does not overflow when spread on paper and has reached the proper consistency. Transfer to a porcelain container; just as it begins to set, wrap a piece of silk soaked in mercury and place it over the ointment. When ready for use, wipe away the mercury; this prevents the surface of the ointment from drying out excessively. It is best to prepare this during the twelfth lunar month.
