Drug Formulation

Mulberry wood ash (burn the wood separately; collect the charcoal embers and place them in a large vat. Allow them to naturally decompose into white ash. Take 1 dou of this ash, line a sieve with cotton paper, and pour boiling water over it to extract the liquid. Store the liquid in a porcelain jar. Continue pouring until the liquid no longer tastes bitter, astringent, or salty. Transfer the liquid to a porcelain bowl and simmer it in a double boiler until it thickens to the consistency of thin paste) 1 dou, eggplant stalk ash (prepared by leaching as described above) 1 dou, mineral ash 1 dou (i.e., lime; wood-fired lime is preferable; leach the liquid as described above). Simmer and mix the three ingredients until well blended; this is called “Three Immortals Ointment.” It may also be used to treat milder cases of boils and abscesses. Additionally, prepare 1 liang of lye solution by simmering, then add it to the fine powder mixture to complete the full formula. For every 5 liang of “Three Immortals Ointment,” mix in: 3 qian 5 fen of toad venom dissolved in wine until uniform; 2 qian of plum-blossom borneol; 1 qian of genuine ox gallstone; and 2 qian of pearl—all three ingredients ground to a fine powder like flour.
