Processing
Three days after the Frost’s Descent solar term, cut the vine 2 chi from the root and insert the root end (one joint) upside down into a new earthenware bottle. Cover the top to prevent dust from entering. The next day, take a clean, new earthenware jar, pour the liquid from the bottle into it, and reinsert the vine as before. After three days, when the liquid has been fully absorbed, seal the jar tightly and store it for future use.

Instructions for Use
If the patient has a fever, restlessness, and thirst but no red spots have yet appeared, take 1 liang of madder root, decoct it in water to a concentrated decoction (about 2 wine cups), mix it with 2 wine cups of loofah juice, and drink it; relief will be immediate, and the smallpox eruption will be mild. If the eruption has already appeared and the spots are reddish-purple and densely clustered, use a concentrated decoction of lithospermum root to make a drink; the spots will soon become rosy and lustrous.If the rash is interspersed with spots, prepare a decoction of rhinoceros horn, lithospermum root, and madder root and take it mixed with hot water; during the cold months, prepare it with wine instead. For epidemic diseases, mix a small amount of ginger juice with honey and take it.
