Drug Formulation

5 liang of genuine Huangdan (grind into a fine powder; wash with water and let dry; place in thick cotton paper; roast in a pot until cooked, then remove; let cool on the ground; repeat the process of roasting and cooling nine times to completely remove lead impurities; grind again into a dust-like consistency for use); 2 liang of Sichuan Coptis (remove the rhizome, clean, and chop finely);1 female and 1 male Stone Swallow (the larger ones are about the size of a betel nut; mix in equal parts with Stone Crab, pound into a powder, wash with water, and set aside for use), Stone Crab in any amount (mix in equal parts with the female and male Stone Swallows, pound into a powder, and wash with water),12 Chebulic myrobalan fruits, 3 or 5 qian of genuine bear bile (the more used, the faster the effect; test method: sprinkle the powder on the water’s surface; if a drop of water the size of a grain of millet causes the powder to disperse, it is genuine; this is a miraculous eye medicine), 8 liang of winter white honey (filtered clean).

Processing

First, take the Lian andand Chezi in 3 bowls of well water until reduced to 1.5 bowls. Grind the stone crabs and stone swallows into a fine powder, wash with water, and mix with the decoction and honey. Simmer in a silver pot over low heat until it boils 3–5 times, then add the powder and continue simmering. Stir continuously with a willow, peach, or locust twig. Keep a basin of water nearby; as soon as the mixture begins to boil, lift the pot and place it in the basin of water. Wait until the mixture forms threads, then add the bear bile and stir in a circular motion for over a hundred turns.

Instructions for Use

Apply 5, 7, or 9 times daily; do not apply to both eyes at once. Apply for 7 days initially, then stop for 3–5 days, and apply for another 7 days. Use lampwick to gently rub away the opacity. For severe cases, treatment will take no more than 3–7 days.
