Drug Formulation

Coptis rhizome half liang, Polygonum multiflorum (peeled) half liang, Aconite root (peeled) half liang, Angelica sinensis root (tail) half liang, Angelica dahurica half liang, Sichuan Aconite (peeled) 2 fen and a half, Orpiment (for summer use) 2 liang, Frankincense half liang, Myrrh half liang, Dragon’s Blood half liang.

Processing

Coarsely crush the first six ingredients. Combine them with 5 liang of clear oil in a cauldron and simmer over alternating high and low heat.until the mixture turns black. Strain out the residue through a cloth, then return the medicinal oil to the cauldron. Add Huangdan and, using a handful of peach and willow twigs, stir continuously without stopping. Once it turns black again, add the finely ground Blood Gossypium, Frankincense, and Myrrh, stir evenly, and simmer briefly. Test by dripping a drop into water; if it forms a bead that does not disperse, transfer the mixture to a earthenware bowl and submerge it in cold water for one day and one night to remove the heat toxicity.
