Drug Formulation

Astragalus (select only undamaged, non-worm-eaten roots; cut into 2-cun-long pieces, flatten them, moisten with cold salted water, place in an earthenware container, cover, and steam three times over a steamer; then bake and chop for use) 1 liang,Cooked Dried Rehmannia (select plump, large, and moist specimens; wash thoroughly and bake dry; moisten with high-quality rice wine, place in an earthenware vessel, cover, and steam over a rice steamer; then sun-dry; repeat this process 7 times; chop and bake) 1 liang (net weight), Angelica sinensis (remove the root base and wash thoroughly; take a section from the top to the center; chop;roast until dry; use the section from the middle to the tip, reserving the rest for use with other herbs) half liang, Chuanxiong (chopped, lightly roasted) half liang, Ginseng (top removed, chopped, roasted) half liang, White Poria (black skin removed, chopped, roasted) half liang, Licorice (roasted) half liang,White Peony Root (select those with bark; those without bark are counterfeit. Peel off the bark, chop, and dry for use) half liang, Cinnamon Bark (peel off the coarse outer bark, chop, and do not expose to fire) half liang, Tiantai Wuyao (if genuine Tiantai Wuyao is unavailable, use large chunks from Longxing Prefecture,chopped, and dried) half liang, Atractylodes macrocephala (soak in rice washing water for half a day, chop into square pieces the size of a little finger, dry thoroughly, then stir-fry with wheat bran until yellow—do not overcook—remove the bran, and chop for use) half liang, Dried Tangerine Peel (do not use sand tangerine peel; soak in water, remove the white pith,roast, and cut into pieces) half liang; genuine Schisandra chinensis (the seed should be shaped like a pig’s kidney, with slightly black flesh and a strong bitter taste—this is the genuine variety; remove stems and twigs, and use after stir-frying; seeds resembling those of the sand tangerine are Schisandra chinensis var. tu, which are unsuitable for use) half liang.

Weigh each of the above herbs accurately, grind them into a powder, and mix thoroughly.

Instructions for Use

Take 1 liang of the mixture per dose; add 1 bowl of water, 5 slices of fresh ginger, and 2 northern jujubes. Decoct together until reduced to 8-fen of a bowl, strain out the residue, and take the clear liquid, divided into 2 doses; set aside the residue, dry it in the sun, grind it into a fine powder, and take it regularly thereafter. For each dose, add 1 zhan of water, 3 slices of fresh ginger, and 1 jujube, decoct until reduced to 8-fen, and take it.
