Drug Formulation

Rhubarb 3 qian, Astragalus 3 qian, Earthworm (cleaned of soil) 3 qian, Angelica 3 qian, Dragon Bone 3 qian, Frankincense 3 qian, Myrrh 3 qian, Borax 3 qian, Arsenic Sulfide 3 qian, Sichuan Tortoise Shell 3 qian, Mercury Oxide 3 qian, Borneol 1 qian, Jiangzi 21 grains (shells removed), Musk a small amount.

Processing

Decoct the above ingredients with 1 dou of buckwheat ash; strain the decoction through the ash three times. Reduce the liquid to one-third of its original volume, then add 5 qian of sparrow droppings collected from snow-covered areas. Bring to a boil 10 times, extract the liquid, let it cool, clarify it, and boil it down again. Add powdered rhubarb and boil for three more times; then add 3 liang each of sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide.

Instructions for Use

For each dose of 1 liang of the medicine, add 3 liang of quicklime and half a liang of orpiment; mix thoroughly. Simmer until, when a drop is placed in water, it remains undissolved to the very bottom—only then is it ready. Extract the mixture and seal it in a cake; when ready for use, add musk and borneol.
