Drug Formulation

Elephant skin 5 qian (sliced thinly; roast in a small pot until yellow and dry, taking care not to burn it),Dragon Bone 5 qian (use the finest grade; grind while raw), Aged Resin 1 liang (in provinces such as Shanxi and Shaanxi, where lacquer is unavailable, local people coat the inside of coffins with rosin and beeswax during burial. Decades later, when a reburial is conducted and the coffin has rotted, it is replaced with a new one; the resin and wax remaining inside the decayed coffin are referred to as “Aged Resin.”In the southeastern provinces, where “old-wood resin” is unavailable, substitute 1 liang of lime that has aged for several hundred years; its effectiveness is the same as that of “old-wood resin”), 1 liang of “cunbai” resin (i.e., the black-wrapped variety of pine resin), 10 liang of pine resin (melt together with the “cunbai” resin, stir thoroughly, pour into cold water, then remove and let cool and dry), 1 liang of “fei fan” (prepared by thoroughly boiling white alum in a pot).

Instructions for Use

In cases of lacerations or fractures caused by knives or stones, apply the medicine to the wound and fan the area with a fan. If the wound swells, prepare a decoction of Coptis and apply it with a feather; the swelling will subside immediately.
