Drug Formulation

He Shou Wu (take equal parts of the red and white varieties; soak in black bean juice overnight; scrape off the skin with a bamboo knife; slice thinly and sun-dry; soak in black bean juice again overnight; the next morning, steam in a willow-wood steamer over mulberry wood fire for three sticks of incense; repeat this process nine times, then sun-dry) 72 liang,Dodder Seeds (First, wash away the floating, hollow seeds; then rinse with clean water, squeezing out sand and mud 5–6 times. Select the seeds that sink, dry them in the sun, and sort out any foreign seeds one by one. Choose only the firm, waist-shaped seeds with filaments. Soak them in ash-free wine for 7 days before placing them in the steamer,steam for 7 incense sticks’ worth of time, sun-dry, then soak in separate wine overnight, place in the steamer and steam for 6 incense sticks’ worth of time, sun-dry; repeat this process 9 times, then sun-dry and grind into a fine powder) 1 jin,Xiqian Grass (harvest leaves in May–June; wash thoroughly under running water; sun-dry; mix with honey and ash-free wine until moist, and let stand overnight; steam for 3 sticks of incense the next morning; repeat this process 9 times; sun-dry and grind into a fine powder) 1 jin, Mulberry Leaves (harvest tender leaves in April; wash thoroughly under running water; sun-dry; process according to the Xiqian method for nine cycles; grind into a fine powder) 8 liang,Nuzhen fruit (harvest black, kidney-shaped fruits on the Winter Solstice; remove the coarse skin; soak in wine overnight; steam for three incense sticks’ worth of time; sun-dry; grind into a fine powder) 8 liang, Honeysuckle flower (also known as Jin Yin Hua; pick and dry in the shade; follow the nine-step preparation method for Xiquancao; sun-dry; grind into a fine powder) 4 liang,Sichuan Eucommia (thick pieces are best; remove the coarse bark; moisten with rock salt mixed with ginger juice until slightly damp; stir-fry until the fibers snap) 8 liang, Male Achyranthes (those from Huaiqing Prefecture are best; remove the root base and clean thoroughly; the flesh should be curved but unbroken; thick and plump specimens are considered “male”; mix with wine and sun-dry) 8 liang,Huaiqing Raw Rehmannia (select the “nail-head, mouse-tail” variety or the original branch powder; those that form large branches when mixed with water-mold are effective; break off pieces the size of rice grains, sun-dry, and grind into a fine powder) 4 liang.

Processing

Combine the four decoctions (1 jin of dried lotus root decoction, 1 jin of golden rosehip decoction, 2 jin of black sesame decoction, and 1 jin of mulberry fruit decoction) with the powdered herbs mentioned above to form pills. If the decoctions are insufficient, supplement with white honey and pound until moist and well-blended.
