Instructions for Use
Cut all the above herbs into fine slices. Use one bucket of children’s urine to clarify the water, then pour it into a porcelain basin; add 3 jin of calamine, soak for one day and one night, clarify the liquid, soak again, and strain. Place the calamine into a Hun Yuan ball and calcine until red-hot, then immerse it in the herbal solution. Repeat this process about ten times. Once cooled and set, remove the calamine, place it in a Yangcheng jar, seal it tightly, and apply heat; for each jar, apply heat for the duration of three sticks of incense. The light, clear portion, when combined with the following formula, can treat blindness; the sediment at the bottom can treat conjunctivitis.Adjust the quantities of the various ingredients as described below. If you do not place the mixture in a jar and apply heat, grind the calcined zinc into a fine powder, wash it with water to separate the clear and turbid fractions, and use both separately. For example, to prepare 10 liang of calcined zinc, add 5 qian of amber and 8 qian of pearl—both calcined in a Hun Yuan ball until extremely fine—along with 3 qian of borneol and 3 liang of official boron, washed over a copper vessel; 6 qian of cuttlefish bone (used raw); 2 liang of bismuth sulfate (calcined on a copper tile); 2 liang of white jade (calcined until red and then soaked in a child’s urine—the number of times is not fixed, but continue until a smooth, fine powder is formed);3 qian of eagle droppings (roasted on bamboo leaves and ground to a fine powder), 3 qian of bear bile (calcined on a clay tile to preserve its properties, then ground to a fine powder), 1 liang of genuine human placenta (washed clean, stir-fried until yellow to preserve its properties, then ground to a fine powder), 1 liang of Eupatorium (roasted and ground to a fine powder), 5 qian of dried alum, 3 qian of mercury oxide, 3 qian of cinnabar, and 3 qian of calcium carbonate. This is the complete formula in liang measurements; it should be administered according to the specific eye condition, and it is universally effective.
