15–30g of Saponaria root, 50–100g of japonica rice, and rock sugar to taste.

Benefits

For lung heat and dryness with dry cough and scant phlegm; or for chronic cough without phlegm, dry throat due to deficient lung qi or yin deficiency of the lung and stomach; or for thirst resulting from fluid depletion following a febrile illness.

Instructions for Use

First, decoct the Saponaria root to extract the medicinal liquid; strain out the residue, then add the japonica rice and cook into a thin porridge. Once the porridge is cooked, add rock sugar. Alternatively, use 30–60 g of fresh Saponaria root, wash and slice it, decoct to obtain a concentrated liquid, then cook the porridge with the japonica rice and rock sugar. Take for 3–5 consecutive days as one course of treatment.

Note

Patients with a common cold or cough caused by exposure to cold should avoid this remedy. When cooking sand ginseng porridge, it should be thin and runny, not thick and sticky.
