Processing

First, boil the needle cinnabar and sulfur in 1 dou 5 sheng of strong vinegar until dry; then calcine them over a fire. Wait until the ghostly flames have completely subsided, let cool, and grind into a fine powder.Separately, take 2 liang of sulfur and boil it again with 1 dou 5 sheng of vinegar. Wait until it dries, then calcine it as before. Stop once the ghostly flames have completely subsided. Allow it to cool, then rinse with water to extract the purple liquid, removing the needle cinnabar. Clarify the purple liquid until it is extremely clear, then remove all the clear water. Air-dry it, then add the white alum andsalt, and grind them together. Place the mixture in a porcelain jar and calcine it with heat applied from all four sides. Stop once the boiling inside the jar subsides. Allow it to cool, then remove it,grind it finely, and mix it with vinegar to form a paste. First, take half the mixture and pack it tightly into a lead bucket. Immediately place two layers of gold leaf and cinnabar on top of the bucket, then cover it with the remaining bucket, packing it tightly. Heat it with 4 liang of fire for 21 days, then transfer it to a copper bucket, seal it tightly, and heat it with 6 liang of fire for another 21 days. Finally, heat it with 10 jin of fire; once the fire is extinguished, it will dissolve on its own.Remove the medicine from the cooled furnace; the cinnabar will have been subdued. Spread it thinly on a damp surface. When it has been combined and left to rest for one cycle, the fire toxicity will have been eliminated. Grind it finely, then form it into pills using date pulp, each the size of a sesame seed.
