Processing

First, place the rosin in a large copper pot of clear water and boil it until it is completely melted. When it begins to bubble and float to the surface, use a bamboo skewer to slowly skim off the hot water. Quickly pour it into a basin of cold water. After a short while, pull and stretch it while it is still hot, as if making rice candy. If it is too hot to handle, dip it briefly into cold water and remove it immediately; do not let it get too cold, or it will solidify and become impossible to pull and stretch. Multiple people must assist, with each person holding a clump to pull; otherwise, it will cool too quickly. Once it has cooled and solidified, return it to the clear water and boil it again as before, then pour it out and pull it apart. This process may be repeated five times at a minimum and up to seven times at most; the more times you do this, the better the result, provided you do not mind the effort. Finally, take 3–4 fresh scallions with their roots intact, wash them, pat them slightly dry, and pound them into a paste to extract their natural juice; discard the pulp. Slowly simmer the rosin in the scallion juice until it is completely dried out. Pour cold water over it once more, then shape it into cakes as desired. The longer it ages, the better; however, fresh ones may also be used.Weigh 2 liang of this mixture separately for each batch, combine it with the other prescribed herbs, and set aside the remainder as needed. Grind the mixture into an extremely fine powder, store it in a porcelain jar with a tight-fitting lid, and ensure no air escapes.
