Processing

First, use 3 jin of charcoal to roast the oyster shells until they glow red-hot; let them cool, then grind them into powder and divide the powder into two portions, each weighing half a jin.Take a large crucible, seal it with salt mud, leaving only the opening exposed. Place 4 liang of oyster shells firmly on the bottom of the crucible. Next, grind the sulfur and talcum powder together into a fine powder. Place a small, bottomless bamboo tube on top of the oyster shells. Fill the center and all four sides of the crucible with oyster shells. Then take the bamboo tube—ensuring it does not touch the four sides of the crucible—and press the remaining 4 liang of oyster shellspress them firmly onto the sulfur, leaving 2–3 cuns free at the rim. Surround the pot with 3 jin of kindling over a steady fire. When flames rise from the pot, use a spoon to add the remaining oysters; repeat this as flames appear, continuing until the flames die out. Allow to cool, then remove and grind into a fine powder. Next, take a large, new brick, chisel a well in it, about half a brick deep or more. Divide the uncalcined oyster shells evenly in half and spread one half thickly across the bottom of the well. Next, place the calcined sulfur and the large oyster shells on top, then cover them with the remaining half of the oyster shells. Press down firmly to level the surface, then cover securely with a new white tile. Surround it with one cheng of charcoal and burn it until the fire dies out.Remove the mixture, bury it in soil for half a day to dispel the heat toxicity, grind it into a fine powder, and mix with a few drops of water to form pills the size of a paulownia seed.
