Motherwort (harvested on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month; sun-dried until crisp, then burned to ash; ensure no soil remains on the roots when harvesting, as soil renders the herb ineffective).

Processing
When burning the herb, first sprinkle water on a designated area or prepare a clay furnace to burn the motherwort. After a long time, when the embers have completely died out, sift the ashes through a measuring basket. If the ashes are dry, mix them thoroughly with water until well blended, then knead the mixture until it is thoroughly worked. Form it into pills the size of a chicken’s egg, dry them thoroughly in the sun, and make a small furnace from yellow earth. Cut a small hole on each of the four sides of the furnace. Place raw charcoal at the top and bottom so that both are lit.place the medicinal pills in the center. Apply a strong fire for the duration of one meal’s cooking time; then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, ensuring the flame never dies out—if it does, the result will be poor. After one fu-shi, the medicine will be ready; under no circumstances should a fierce fire be used.If the medicine melts and turns a yellowish-glazed porcelain color, it will be ineffective; if the fire is gentle, the medicine will remain white and fine-grained. After one Fu, remove it and place it in a white porcelain vessel. Grind it with a jade pestle (if a jade pestle is unavailable, a deer antler pestle may be used), sift it through silk, and continue grinding continuously for three days. Collect the medicine, store it in a dry container, and keep it well hidden.
