Drug Formulation

3 cicadas (wings and legs removed, lightly roasted), 1 fen of Ephedra (roots and nodes removed), 1 fen of Uncaria, half liang of Bupleurum (stems removed), half liang of White Peony, 1 liang of Gypsum, 1 liang of Scutellaria, half liang of Anemarrhena, 1 liang of Dragon’s Teeth,half liang of rhino horn shavings, half liang of glehnia root (with the root tip removed), half liang of licorice (lightly roasted until reddish, then chopped), 5 cun of snake shed skin (burned to ash), ginger juice, 1 fen of ox bile (finely ground), 1 liang of honey, 5 he of raw rehmannia juice, and half liang of apricot kernels (soaked in hot water, with the skin, tip, and double kernels removed, then ground into a paste).

Processing

All ingredients listed above, including the snake shed skin, should be finely chopped; first, decoct in 2 large bowls of water until reduced to 1 bowl, then strain out the residue; add 1 small bowl of bamboo sap, decoct for another 5–7 boils, then add the apricot kernels, honey, ginger juice, and raw rehmannia juice. Simmer over low heat, stirring constantly, for about ten or more boils. Allow to cool, transfer to a porcelain container, and stir in the ox bile until evenly mixed.
