Formulas Name : Bone-Setting Pills

Chinese Name : 整骨丸

Drug Formulation

13 liang of white alum (sifted), 6 liang of beeswax, 4 liang of yellow丹, 4 liang of mitesong (ground separately), 4 liang of natural copper (ground into powder separately), 1 liang of frankincense (ground separately), 1 liang of cinnabar (ground separately), 1 liang of myrrh (ground separately), and 12 liang of lard (from the 12th lunar month).

Source

From *Yang’s Family Prescriptions*, Volume 14.

Processing

In a silver or stone vessel, or a new pot, first add the lard and simmer until reduced to a liquid, then remove any tendons, membranes, or impurities;Next, add the beeswax and wait for it to melt; let it cool slightly, then add the miso, yellow丹, and natural copper powder. Simmer over low heat, stirring with a willow wood spatula, until the mixture reaches a consistency where a drop of water does not disperse. Remove the pot and place it on a cool surface; add the cinnabar, frankincense, myrrh, and white alum, and stir thoroughly with the spatula to form pills the size of a paulownia seed.

Benefits

For injuries resulting from a fall from a height—such as torn tendons and broken bones, with damage to both internal and external tissues, causing unbearable pain—regardless of the severity.

Instructions for Use

Take 20 pills per dose, washed down with hot scallion wine (slice the white part of the scallion into thin strips, place them in hot wine, cover with a cup for a short while, and do not let the steam escape). If the patient is unconscious or too weak to swallow the medicine, dissolve the pills in the scallion wine and administer them orally. Additionally, cut 2–3 pills in half and roast them over a flame on a piece of paper;if they do not dissolve, add a small amount of oil and spread the mixture into a medicated paste according to the size of the injury. To prevent the paste from sticking, apply mica ointment around the edges and affix it to the skin; after some time, the numbness will turn to itching. For fractures or sprains where the bones are aligned and do not form a “reed-joint” deformity, new muscle tissue will form at the site of the injury. For chronic fractures that flare up with pain during overcast or damp weather, this formula may also be taken at any time.
