Drug Formulation

Angelica sinensis, Notopterygium incisum, Rehmannia glutinosa, Phellodendron amurense, Phellodendron chinense, Vitex negundo, Ligusticum chuanxiong, Scutellaria baicalensis, Paeonia rubra, Gardenia jasminoides seeds, Coptis chinensis, Rheum palmatum, and Asarum sieboldii—each in equal parts.

Processing

Prepare each ingredient separately, place them in a clean copper pot, cover with clean water about one cun above the herbs, and simmer until thoroughly infused. Strain out the residue and retain the concentrated decoction. Mix this with high-quality, fine-grained honey in equal parts, then return the mixture to the copper pot and bring to a boil. Filter through two layers of cotton silk,then simmer in the copper vessel until it forms a paste as thin as a thread. Adjust the heat according to the season to control the color. Gradually add myrrh and cinnabar, ground to a fine powder like flour, followed by camphor and musk; the more of these added, the better.
