Processing

Cut each of the above herbs into coarse slices. Soak them in 12 jin of pure sesame oil; in summer, soak for 3 days; in winter, soak for half a month. Simmer the mixture until it turns a black, charred color. Strain out the residue using a piece of hemp cloth, then reweigh the oil. If there are about 10 jin, add 5 jin of sifted realcinnabar; if there are 8 jin, add 4 jin of realcinnabar. Add the realcinnabar according to these measurements, and the result will be precise.Return the oil to the pot to boil, slowly adding the orpiment. Stir continuously with a locust or willow stick, starting with a gentle heat and gradually increasing it, until the mixture becomes so concentrated that a drop forms a bead in water that does not disperse. It is firm in spring and summer, and soft in autumn and winter—this is the key principle. Store it in a porcelain bottle.
