Processing

Use all the above herbs raw and decoct them. First, wash and sun-dry the hooves of five animals—horse, cow, sheep, pig, and donkey—and weigh out 5 liang of each.2 jin 4 liang of fragrant sesame oil. First, simmer the hoof shells in the oil until thoroughly softened; then add the aforementioned herbs and simmer together until dissolved. Stir continuously with a mulberry wood stick, skim off the residue, and strain the oil. Clean the pot thoroughly, then add 1 jin 2 liang of finely ground, thoroughly purified realgar (roasted until dry) to the oil. Simmer the mixture over low heat until a drop of the liquid forms a bead when held up to the light. Remove and soak in water for 7 days.

Instructions for Use

When ready to use, melt the mixture over a water bath, spread it on the affected area, and be sure to grind the residue extremely fine, sift it, and store it. To treat injuries caused by broken silver saddle beams on horses, cattle, donkeys, and mules, wash the affected area with water boiled with Sichuan pepper, then immediately apply this powder dry to fill the wound; it will heal on its own in 7 days.

Note

Avoid applying to the ears or the space between the eyebrows.
